The Customer periodically shops at The Joke Shop, usually against his better judgement, looking to purchase a gift, but instead ends up getting roped in to one of Miranda and Stevie's spiraling discussions.

Series 1[]

Excuse
The Customer is entrapped by Miranda and Stevie who involve him with their discussion of excuses Miranda might be able to use to get out of the party her mother is throwing. It is he who tells Miranda he is gay and thereby gives Miranda the idea of telling her mother she is gay. When he points out it may cause a breach and her mother will never speak to her again, Miranda is thrilled, the idea "has no down side." When the party is still held, he attends.

Series 3[]

Three Little Words
In this episode, the Customer is again entangled in a Miranda Stevie treacly discussion in which they must think up a way for Miranda to tell Mike she loves him when she finds that she cannot return the sentiment. After a prolonged discussion, the Customer tells her she can't say it because she doesn't love Mike. Miranda, finally makes the realization that she is in love with Gary.

The Final Curtain
In this episode, the Customer comes into the shop with great trepidation, hoping to find a wedding gift for spouse to be; a heart shaped picture frame. The Customer tries to avoid getting roped into anything, but eventually ends getting involved in another Stevie/Miranda wrangle. He confirms that a giraffe onesie is not sexy and that Miranda smells a bit like digestive biscuits. When Miranda's friends, concerned that she isn't pushing people off stools, forgetting to eat, and is actually articulating the word 'sex' ask the psychologist to attend an intervention, he is there, again at a loss as to how that happened.

When Miranda finally determines that she still wants Gary, and follows him to what she thought was his rebound wedding, it turns out to be the Customer's wedding to Clive. He's a bit put out that the Gary-Miranda romance is culminating at his wedding, but he is shushed roundly, and Clive even suggests Gary and Miranda get married at his reception.

Physical Appearance[]

The Customer has short, curly, greying fair hair and brown eyes, a lean build, and less than perfect posture.

Trivia[]

  • In a behind-the-scenes special for the making of the series finale, Miranda Hart referred to Dominic's character as "Jim", additionally, in IMDb, it states that Dominic Coleman portrays "Jim" in Miranda. Although never stated on camera, the name is apparently used for the convenience of the actors to refer to the character of the Customer.
  • In Excuse, although he's apparently just a casual acquaintance, and should know nobody at the party, when Miranda announces she is straight, he is seen exchanging wagers with other party guests.
  • In Excuse, he claims that he is married to a man already. However, in The Final Curtain he is seen marrying Clive. This implies that between the events of Excuse and The Final Curtain that the customer goes through a divorce.
